about

Quaternary Panorama is a 20,000 year timeline of the Great Lakes region; beginning during the final advance of the Laurentide ice sheet and ending after the extinction of humans. It spans the formation of the Great Lakes, the migration of indigenous peoples to the region, colonialism, anthropogenic climate change, mass extinction and the aftermath. The visual component of this album is a panorama painted by Asheville, NC artist Zach Briggs. Spanning from left to right it displays the glacial origins of the Great Lakes and the human destruction of the region, while a setting sun is centered.

Quaternary Panorama:

Carved by Glaciers (I) -
Continental Glaciers scour the North American continent, carving out basins and leaving moraines along their periphery.

Laurentide I: Ablation (II) -
Temperatures rise and the Laurentide ice sheet begins to recede, leaving behind quickly growing proglacial lakes.

Laurentide II: Birth (III) -
The Great Lakes are born of the remnants of the Laurentide.

Migration (IV) -
The first Michiganders migrate northward into lands previously buried under miles of ice.

Growth (V) -
Cultures grow and shift as the landscape changes. Hunting and gathering gives way to agriculture and artistry.

Crimson Straits (VI) -
European colonialism finds Michigan. Blood is spilled along the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron during Pontiac’s Rebellion at Fort Michilimackinac.

A Human Summer (VII) -
A single human summer exists as a fleeting moment within the panorama of the Quaternary Period.

Sunset/The Straits Ablaze (VIII) -
Despite the best efforts of the people, the interests of the wealthy few prevail. As the sun sets on human life, oil spills into the Straits of Mackinac; engulfing the horizon in flames.

Extinction/Rebirth (IX) -
Earth warms and climates shift. As the last humans fade away, the Great Lakes remain.

After (X) -
New life emerges along the shore.
