about

Solastalgia is a term created by Australian philosopher Glenn Albrecht. It lends a name to the feeling of being homesick while still at home and refers directly to anxiety wrought from changes to one's surroundings as a result of climate change. This album is about the love of Michigan and fear for its future.

Solastalgia I

A beach bathed in the glow of burning pines/a beach bathed in the glow of a summer sunset.

Human Sea Lamprey

The oil and gas industry made $139,617,257 in campaign contributions during the 2020 election cycle. (www.opensecrets.org/industries/totals.php?cycle=2020&ind=E01) Neither the lobbyists nor the politicians in their pockets will experience the harshest impacts of climate change.

Road Becomes River

During the summer of 2021, Detroit and Southeast Michigan experienced severe flooding in the aftermath of a 100 year rain event. This was the second storm of this intensity to occur within the past decade. These extreme weather events have been exacerbated by aging public infrastructure. Between the 1970s and 2010s federal investment in Southeast Michigan’s infrastructure has decreased from 60% to 10%. (www.bridgemi.com/urban-affairs/understanding-why-detroit-floods-and-why-it-keeps-happening)

Winter

The first snow, the shortest day and the growth of drifts to impassible heights.

Spring

The snowmelt, the vernal equinox and the blooming of springtime flowers.

Summer

The warmth of the overhead sun, the longest day and a summer sunset along the shore.

Autumn

The changing of the leaves, the autumnal equinox and a final day of warmth before the long winter.

Sand and Pine

The smell of sand and pine on a bluff above the lakeshore and the orange glow of the setting sun.

Pyrocumulonimbus

A wildfire producing enough smoke, particulate matter and water vapor that it creates its own cumulonimbus clouds capable of lightning strikes that will sustain the fire until fuel is expended.

Solastalgia II

Fears of what Lake Isle Beach will be in 20 years and memories of what Lake Isle Beach was 20 years ago.

Solastalgia III

Shutter Line 5
We won’t survive
Unless we cut ties with it

Holding the lines
They won’t think twice
To doom our lives for profit

Burned in the fires
Flooded and tired
Those that conspire are unfit
