This album explores the system of 7 planets orbiting the ultra-cool red dwarf star, TRAPPIST-1. The opening and closing tracks are imagined as a flyby of the inner and outer planets respectively, while track 4 (TRAPPIST-1: e) explores the emergence of life on one of the planets within the habitable zone. The remaining four tracks are snapshots of the conditions present on on both the interior planets (Violet Horizon and Unsetting) and exterior planets (Fissures and Tidal Lock), due to the compact nature of the planets’ orbits and the tidal heating and tidal locking acting on each planet.
These songs were written and arranged between June 2017 and March 2018 and were recorded in March and April of 2018 by Jeff Hostetler. The album artwork, layout and CD packaging were designed by Juan Dean. Lucius Fox is Jeremy Cronk and Jonathon Fleming.
This album is best enjoyed when listened to front to back and at loud volumes. If you dig it, tell a friend.
Further insight into the imagery that inspired in each individual track follows below:
1. TRAPPIST-1: b, c, d:
Traveling outward from the star, TRAPPIST-1: a, past planets b, c and d.
2. Violet Horizon:
In the perpetual twilight of the dark region just beyond the terminator line, the horizon glows violet.
On the light side of a tidally locked, inner planet, the continuous daylight scorches the surface while hurricane force winds blow endlessly.
4. TRAPPIST-1: e:
Within the habitable zone, life emerges.
On the light side an outer planet, ice cracks and liquid water from the ocean beneath erupts to the surface.
6. Tidal Lock:
Deep beneath the ice lies an ocean warmed by tidal heating. In the depths giant aquatic creatures lurk.
7. TRAPPIST-1: f, g, h:
Traveling outward past planets f, g and h to the edge of the TRAPPIST-1 system.
